basic materials sector - investing in the stock market long term

using barometers for the basic materials sector of the market

The basic materials sector of the market deals with companies that derive raw materials from the earth and then sell them to companies for production—to make products. Companies that harness raw materials are usually less volatile to economic or market changes, but at the same time can be risky since these companies only have so much land, mines, or initial property to harness raw materials from, and they have to worry about commodity price. They are volatile to commodity price because they are selling commodities to other companies.

If the price of a metal or commodity goes up, it may hurt of help a company in this market sector. I think however basic material companies are some of the best investments on the market for the long term, as long as you have studied them enough to know how much land and resources they have to keep providing raw materials to their clients. If you decide to invest in companies that give raw materials to other companies you should of course still make sure that they have a decent balance, strong cash and a good return on equity.

Thinking about things logically though in a bad economy basic material companies are one of the last types of companies to die if the worst happens because they are some of the very companies that keep humanity alive thus they are needed. Certain basic material companies however, will tend to outlast others even in the worst of economic conditions. Another thing to remember about investing in companies that make raw materials is that most raw materials including precious metals will almost certainly always be worth something, which also means the company will always retain some asset value.

Remember if you do decide to invest in a raw materials sector company, make sure that you have a long term plan and study commodity prices to see if you are entering the market at the right time. For instance if oil has reached a five year low, then it is probably really unlikely that it will go much lower so buying an oil company might be a good idea because it’s probably the correct time to enter the market.
