Unfortunately while they are low risk, they are also very low reward. Almost all of these bonds are exempt from federal income tax and probably state income tax too. This isn't always the case however so make sure you check the bond details and your local laws before you are certain you want to invest your money in them. Most of these bonds are used by federal or local governments to build parks, maintain highways, and other.

These bonds are also used for anything else the government usually does to spend money. I think These bonds are great for retirement income, since they are tax free and low risk. It's a way to generate income without the stress of working,managing a business,watching your equity investments, or making trades constantly and worrying about the market or taxes.
